There are few things which affect the way we think about God more than the songs which we sing about him. So if there is a lack of theologically robust songs, or if the musically-talented Christians of a country lack the kind of theological training needed to compose good songs on a wide range of subjects and texts, the Church will suffer.
The Claritas Project is an effort we will be creating and leading in Germany to help with the perennial problem of music and theology in the Christian life. It involves empowering and equipping talented lay (non-professional) musicians to help compose a new corpus of music for the church’s worship. For a number of reasons, mostly prioritizing, I will be getting around to this project later than I had originally thought, but it will be exciting when it starts, and I was very encouraged to recently learn that the Gospel Coalition is leading an extremely similar (if not identical) effort now in the States.
